Long-term stress and the use of Essential Fatty Acids,Ginkgo Biloba and Garlicby Stephan Van Der LingenLong-term stress may be the number one threat to our healthand well-being.Stress is the physiological, psychological, emotional andbehavioural response of a person seeking to adjust tointernal and external pressures and demands.Long-term stress can lead to a multitude of chronicdiseases and it can cause damage in areas in our brain thatcontribute to cognitive and emotional functioning (burnout?).Some of the stress induced diseases are the following:- Heart disease, i.e. heart attack, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, thrombosis etc.- Diseases of the muscular-skeletal system, i.e. arthritis.- Diseases of the reproductive system, i.e. impotence, loweredlibido, etc.- It may also lead to conditions associated with chronicfatigue, obesity, diabetes type 2 and insulin resistance, skin disorders, digestive disorders, immune systemdisorder, depression and insomnia.Herewith three very valuable nutritional products toaddress some of the effects of the above mentioned stressinduced problems.1. Essential fatty AcidsThe human body do need the "Essential Fatty Acids" and aminimum intake is required for optimal health andwell-being. Essential implies that the body cannot producethe specific fatty acids. We have to take them through foodor nutritional supplements. The "Essential Fatty Acids" is beneficial in addressing problemsassociated with more than 60 health conditions. The Essential fatty Acid can be obtained from sources suchas cold-water salmon oil, sardines, pilchards, eveningprimrose oil and starflower oil. Even Soya Beans! The only dietary requirements are the key essential fatty acids, linolenic (omega-3) and (omega-6) linoleic acids. We need omega-3 to omega-6 in the ratio 2:1.Eat fish. Go and get a can of pilchards in tomato sauce.2. Gingko Biloba (Herb)The leaves and nuts of the Gingko Biloba tree are used asas a herbal remedy. The bioflavonoids in Ginkgo Biloba are responsible for itspotent anti-oxidant activity in the brain, cardiovascularand immune system.Gingko Biloba has a unique capability to improve mentalfunction and peripheral blood flow to the extremities. This increases the blood flow to the brain andextremities ensuring that the tissues get more oxygen andnutrients. This provide for improved memory andconcentration capability. Gingko Biloba protects the myelinsheaths around the nerve fibres and thereby ensures moreefficient transfer of messages along the central and peripheralnervous system and is also used to address problemsassociated with diabetes type 2, i.e. Neuropathy.Use Gingko Biloba in medicinal amounts only in consultationwith a healthcare professional.3. Garlic (Allium Sativum)Garlic (Allium Sativum) can be used as a food supplement toaddress effects associated with the following, i.e.- Reduction of high levels of the of LDL (Low Density Lipids)Cholesterol,- Cardiovascular effects associated with blood lipids (fats)(Cholesterol),- Hypertension (High blood pressure),- Blood clotting abnormalities and flow,- Arteriosclerosis,- High blood sugar levels/diabetes and- Treatment of infections, it is a natural "antibiotic", i.e.support of the immune system.Stephan Van Der Lingen is not engaged in rendering legal, medical, psychological, or other licensed services. THE POSITIVE WEIGHT LOSS APPROACH
THE POSITIVE WEIGHT LOSS APPROACHOnce you have made up your mind to lose weight, you shouldmake that commitment and go into it with a positive attitude. Weall know that losing weight can be quite a challenge. In fact, forsome, it can be downright tough. It takes time, practice andsupport to change lifetime habits. But it's a process you mustlearn in order to succeed. You and you alone are the one who hasthe power to lose unwanted pounds.Think like a winner, and not a loser - - remember thatemotions are like muscles and the ones you use most grow thestrongest. If you always look at the negative side of things, you'll become a downbeat, pessimistic person. Even slightlynegative thoughts have a greater impact on you and last longer thanpowerful positive thoughts.Negative thinking doesn't do you any good, it just holds youback from accomplishing the things you want to do. When a negativethought creeps into your mind, replace it reminding yourself thatyou're somebody, you have self-worth and you possess uniquestrengths and talents.Contemplate what lies ahead of you. Losingweight is not just about diets. It's about a whole new you and thepossibility of creating a new life for yourself. Investigate theweight loss programs that appeal to you and that you feel will teachyou the behavioral skills you need to stick with throughout theweight-loss process. First you should look for support amongfamily and friends. It can be an enormous help to discuss obstaclesand share skills and tactics with others on the same path. Youmight look for this support from others you know who are in weightloss programs and you can seek guidance from someone you know whohas lost weight and kept it off. There are success stories across the country today. Ontelevision and in newspapers, magazines and tabloids about peoplewho have miraculously lost untold pounds and kept it off. In allinstances they say their mental attitude as well as their outlook onlife has totally changed.Diets and weight loss programs are more flexible now thanthey once were and there are many prepared foods already portionedout. They are made attractive and can be prepared in a matter ofminutes. Low-fat and low-calorie foods are on shelves everywhere. You will probably need to learn new, wiser eating skills. You will want a weight loss regimen that gives you some control, rather than imposing one rigid system. Look for one that offers avariety of different eating plans, so you can choose the one that'sbest for you.Keep in mind, too, that your weight loss program will mostlikely include some physical exercises. Look at the exercisingaspect of your program as fun and recreation and not as a form ofgrueling and sweaty work. The fact is that physical fitness islinked inseparable to all personal effectiveness in every field.Anyone willing to take the few simple steps that lie between themand fitness will shortly begin to feel better, and the improvementwill reflect itself in every facet of their existence.Doctors now say that walking is one of the best exercises. It helps the total circulation of blood throughout the body, andthus has a direct effect on your overall feeling of health. Thereare things such as aerobics, jogging, swimming and many otherexercises which will benefit a weight loss program. Discuss theoptions with your doctor and take his advice in planning yourexercise and weight loss program.*****************************************************************Mark Johnson of Online Univesity.comWould you like to get paid between $25 - $90 just for completingsimple 10-25 minute surveys? Conscious Choices
Conscious Choices - By Ashleigh StewartAfter spending some time recently evaluating and trying to come toterms with understanding the facts of my own experiences of havingthe eating disorders anorexia and particularly bulimia I have come tothe conclusion of one aspect of the whole thing and it is somethingwhich I have never been able to comprehend before now. This is apoint of which I do feel is dismissed, ignored or most likely to beyet unrealized by those people who we refer to as being the`victims'of these disorders. What is that? Well, after some recent experiencesof my own I have concluded that people who have eating disorders arein fact not `victims' of this so called `illness' andto label themas being `victims' or `sufferers only succeeds in robbingthem of thefact that they do have their own free will to choose whether theyengage in practicing such eating behaviors or not.You must understand that any person who has an eating disorderthrives on the idea that they are victim because it indirectly givesthem less responsibility of dealing with their problem, allowing themto carry on feeling sorry for themselves. This is all they need toavoid facing the reality of the whole situation that in the end, regardless of any other underlying problems that exist, that they doin fact choose whether or not they wish to have an eating disorder ornot and this is a critical factor which will determine whether thatperson will continue to subject themselves to the horrors of suchhabits or not.My words here might sound severe or unsympathetic, but I did gothrough all of this myself and I know exactly how horrific anddifficult it can be to get out of the patterns of an eating disorder. What I know from it all is that someone with an eating disorder willdo anything in their power to avoid not dealing with and evenaccepting it, even if they realize it or not. Also, what happens isthat it becomes so normal to you that it becomes a lifestyle and itis difficult to see and admit the real extent of what you areactually doing to yourself when you are caught up in all theconfusion.I know only too well how difficult it is to understand why we feelinclined to keep punishing ourselves with these eating disorders.Even for someone who is at the `tail end' of their eatingdisorder,or in other words, someone who has almost finished their healingprocess might feel as if they are stuck between two worlds of notknowing if they still do have an eating disorder or if they are freeof it all. Certainly, in my own case this has what has been going onin my own life recently and I have realized that to be cured of thisdoes not mean simply stopping the behaviours, it is in fact apsychological `state of mind'. For me it seems to be that myownstate of mind after spending years of thinking and feeling the sameway about myself, my body and food has returned to being balanced, asit was before I begun developing the eating disorders in the firstplace. This is all very well, but lately there seemed to be a smallpart of me that wanted to cling onto the fact that I am a`victim' ofan eating disorder. Why is that? Well, perhaps it is out of fear of letting myself go andhandling the responsibility of investing some real love, attentionand care towards myself which is something I have never ever done inmy life before. Maybe it was a lack of discipline when it came to thepoint of always watching my eating habits and patterns, or maybe Ijust watched my eating too much which always reminds me that, yes, Iwas bulimic and I must be careful not to fall into the same old trapagain! Or it might have been because I have been programmedsubconsciously to think self-degrading thoughts for so long that theystill enter my mind.It might be one or all of those factors, but in the end itdoesn'treally matter, as long as we are aware of the fact and realize thatin the end we do have the choice of whether we want to have an eatingdisorder or not and regardless of any help, advice, attention, sympathy, therapy or medical assistance we receive it is still ourresponsibility to deal with it in the end. It is obviously necessaryto receive some guidance to show you the way out of your situationbut the last step of releasing yourself from this is your ownconscious choice to carry on living this way or not and nobody elsecan make that decision for you.In past articles I have referred to an eating disorder as an illnessand referred to the person who has it as being the victim andsufferer, but now after what I have learnt lately, I can see that bycategorizing the people who have eating disorders and their typicalhabits in this way only puts a limitation upon their ability to healthemselves and creates an indirect excuse for them not to take fullconscious choices to heal their problems.Anyone reading this who actually does have an eating disorder, particularly bulimia, might argue here by stating that when they arein `binge and purge' mode that they are helpless with theircompulsion and that they feel out of control when they are goingthrough the whole binge episode. I do agree and completely understandbecause I have been through those experiences so many times myself. However, in the end these habits do arise as the result of somedeeper problems and had these problems been dealt with accordinglyprior to the development of the eating disorder then we would neverhave had the inclination to engage in such eating behaviours in thefirst place. An eating disorder is only the result of lingeringproblems from previous experiences in our lives that are either leftunrealized of simply just have not yet been dealt with.Having an eating disorder is very difficult to understand and it canbe hard to see the true light of it all when you are the one who iscaught up in the middle of it all because your mind is in a whirl ofconfusion. In one way I personally felt very sad to be living withthe thoughts I have lately where I questioned the fact if I wasreally clear and healed of my eating disorder or not. However, I doappreciate the experience at the same time because I have learnt themost valuable lesson I have ever learnt from my years of experiencingbulimia and anorexia. The lesson for me was that we are never ever really victims ofanything, we do have the choice in the end of whether we choose toexist within one experience like this or not, regardless of theextent of the circumstances surrounding it. I had the choice in myhand and it would have been easier for me to carry on with my life ina way of having bulimic habits than what was to fight the temptationto binge and purge. However, by having that situation in my face hasallowed me to realize the choices we do have in light of it all. Themain thing I am trying to say here is that people with eatingdisorders should never be labeled as being victims, they are not. This is all they need to avoid facing the facts that in the end it istheir own choice to heal them selves or to carry on with living withhabits of an eating disorder. That's life and the fact that we have free will to choose our ownlife direction, destiny, fate or however you'd like it refer toit,it not applicable in certain circumstances, it stands in all cases. There is no real excuse for this behaviour in the end. No one shouldhave to live in this way under any circumstances, particularly theones in which you create for yourself. Happiness is a state of mind, health is a state of mind and if we are unable to comprehend thisthen how can we ever expect to be happy with any of the circumstancesthat are presented before us in life, just think about it!About the Author:Ashleigh is a keen writer and is involved in writing for an internetweb site called `The Free Spirit Centre'.
